Opuntia streptacantha, Opuntia ficus indica
Nopal- a cactus with
comprehensive health benefits
Nopal belongs to the cactus family. “Opuntia streptacantha” is not only an alternative treatment to lower blood sugar, but also an important component of a cholesterol-conscious diet.
Nopal, known in Mexico as “Nopalnocheztli” and Argentina and Chile as “Tuna”, is a prickly plant with a tree-like structure. Nopal grows between two and five metres tall, with a trunk circumference reaching 65 centimetres or more. The fruits – so-called Tunas – are dark red to yellow and have a diameter of five centimetres. They can be eaten raw or made into marmalade or juice. Nopal, or Nopales, pads are eaten in Mexico as a vegetable.

Rich in nutrients and health benefits
Nopal originates in the arid and semi-arid regions of central and northern Mexico. The plant grows at high altitudes of 1,800 to 2,700 metres above sea level. The botanical name is “Opuntia streptacantha” or “Opuntia ficus indica”.
Nopal is rich in both iron and calcium and also contains amino acids (arginine, histidine, lysine, methionine, threonine), vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3 and C) as well as dietary fibre. The Nopal cactus also has an extraordinarily high pectin content.
Diabetes mellitus and high blood sugar
Nopal has long been known in Mexico as a natural remedy to lower blood sugar. The valuable ingredients of the cactus are naturally effective at helping treat diabetes mellitus. This has been scientifically proven.
Thanks to its active ingredients, Nopal maintains and promotes pancreas and liver function. For this reason, the prickly pear cactus Nopal can be seen as an alternative treatment for diabetes mellitus.
